What happens in an eye test?

During your eye test, your optometrist will ask about your vision, overall health and lifestyle. Bring any eyewear you are currently using so this can be checked during your eye exam. At 1001 Optometry, we care about the details! This is where your personalised care begins! It’s easy to book an eye test appointment with us online.

An eye examination comprises three key components:

  • Vision tests to examine your eyes’ vision and how well your eyes are working
  • Tests to comprehensively check your eye health
  • Tests to determine whether glasses, contact lenses or any further advice or management is needed to ensure your vision and eye health are maintained and protected

The following activities may be performed during your eye exam, with your optometrist explaining each one as you go along:

  • Vision testing on a letter chart to determine if you have any eyesight problems such as shortsightedness, longsightedness, astigmatism and reading vision issues. For kids that can’t read their letters yet, don’t worry! We have other ways of accurately checking the vision of children too!
  • Getting a comprehensive eye health test using up-to-date instruments and advanced imaging technology to thoroughly check the health of the front and back of your eyes.
  • A comprehensive eye test with one of our optometrists checks for eye health problems and eye diseases, including dry eye, cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma.
  • We bulk-bill Medicare for our eye tests, and we have state of the art advanced imaging technology to investigate further if additional testing is needed

After your eye test

Once eye testing is done, the optometrist will explain your eye test results. They’ll discuss:

  • Whether you need a new prescription, and if the same or different type of lens design is best for you or if you need new glasses
  • What eye conditions you may have and the status of your eye health
  • How to protect your vision and eye health in the future

The optometrist will prescribe a prescription if you need new glasses or contact lenses.

Our optometrists work closely together with eye specialists if this is necessary for your eyecare.

Why regular eye tests matter

An eye test is about so much more than updating your glasses prescription! Regular check-ups give your optometrist the chance to detect common eye conditions early, including dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Many of these conditions can develop silently, with little or no symptoms at first, making early detection vital.

Your eyes can also provide important clues about your overall health. In fact, an eye exam can sometimes reveal the first signs of systemic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. That’s why making the time to book an eye test appointment is an essential part of preventive healthcare.

Who should book an eye test and how often?

Not sure when it’s time to see an optometrist? Here’s a simple guide to help you decide when to book your next eye test online:

  • Children: Every 12 months. As 80% of all children’s learning comes from their vision, and as we use digital devices earlier than we used to, it is important to ensure that there are no vision issues present as well as ensure preventative tips are given to protect children from developing eyesight problems. Early eye testing is critical to support the best possible learning and development for children.
  • Adults under 40: Every 1-2 years, even if you don’t wear glasses, to keep track of subtle vision changes.
  • Adults over 40: Every 12 months, as the eyesight changes during this period and the risk of eye conditions increases with time.
  • Seniors (65+): Every 12 months, to monitor any age-related vision changes and protect eye health.
  • People with diabetes or family history of eye disease: More frequent tests as advised by your optometrist. A minimum of every 12 months.

Don’t wait until you notice a problem. Book an optometrist appointment and ensure you stay on top of your eye health before issues arise.
