Blurred Vision

Blurred Vision

What is Blurred Vision?

Losing focus continuously? Are things appearing to be hazy and not sharp enough? You may have blurred vision.

In cases of blurred vision, most of the times it is the refractive errors that lead to it. These refractive errors can be nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. However, this blurriness could also indicate signs for more serious issues such as neurological/ocular diseases. You could have it one eye or both eyes. Sometimes, strong medications can cause blurred vision as side effect which will probably exist for a while and then go away once the strong medications are stopped. Blurred vision is also linked to symptoms such as headaches, redness or eye irritation, light sensitivity etc.

There are many causes that can exist behind blurred vision. These include:

  • Migraine headaches: Severe headaches that occur due to genetic or environmental factors and involves the brain’s blood vessels and nerves.
  • Cataracts: A type of blurred vision that make the eyes opaque gradually.
  • Abrasions to the cornea: Scratches or injuries caused to the eye due to physical contact or sensitivity to the light.
  • Stroke: A cardiac arrest can affect the blood flow in the overall body thereby affecting the vision losing the sharpness.
  • Macular degeneration: An age-related medical condition that decreases the vision’s quality.
  • Optic Neuritis: The damage of the optic nerve due to inflammation caused by toxins, radiation, shock etc.

The moment you experience severe blurred vision accompanied with headaches, voice control and facial drooping, you must contact for immediate treatment in general or visit an eye specialist as soon as possible.

In order to prevent blurred vision and other related symptoms for major diseases, it is important for you to change your lifestyle with certain habits such as:

  • Wearing sunglasses that cover your eyes completely from the bright sunlight.

  • Ensure to go for an eye test at least once in 6 months to be aware of your eye health.
  • Avoid smoking which not just benefits your eyes but your whole body in general.
  • If you use contact lenses, make sure to clean your hands wish anti-septic liquids before you put on or take off the contacts from your eyes.
