Get the most out of your NIB Optical Extras Cover by shopping at 1001 Optometry.
We pride ourselves on providing expert optometry services, top-tier eyewear, and over three decades of trusted eye care. All because we’re passionate about you and your ocular well-being. That is why we aim to help NIB health fund members maximise their optical cover benefits.
Notable benefits your NIB health insurance package offers yearly include rebates for portions of your optical services. This can help reduce your gap and lessen your out-of-pocket expenses.
To make the most of your benefits, make sure you claim them before the year ends. All benefits reset on January 1st each year and won't be rolled over into the new year!
Making an NIB Optical Claim
Claiming your optical products with your NIB health insurance is straightforward once you understand what’s covered, how much is covered and the claims process. To help you begin your claim journey, we have provided insights into all these key areas below:
What does NIB Health Insurance Cover?
Your NIB Health Insurance with Optical Extras covers your prescription:
-
Glasses frames and lenses (including multifocal lenses and safety glasses)
-
Sunglasses lenses
-
Contact lenses*
However, it does not cover sunglasses frames. If you are interested in one of our exclusive sunglasses frames, you will need to pay out of pocket.
*NIB Optical Extras Cover includes a 6 or 12-month supply of prescription contact lenses with No Gap on a select range. This includes Prevue 1 Day Pronto, Prevue Platinum Plus, ACUVUE Oasys, ACUVUE Vita and ACUVUE Oasys Vita Toric. Other add ons may be excluded.
How much do NIB Health Funds Cover?
How much your NIB Health Fund covers you for optical can be broken down into two parts:
-
The first is your level of NIB Health Insurance and extras
-
Meanwhile, the second is the benefit percentages that NIB will cover for optical services and products
Find your health insurance package below to see the corresponding benefits limit and percentage:
NIB Health Insurance Package* | Annual Optical Limit | Benefit Percentage |
Basic Extras | $150 | 100% |
Core Extras | $250 | 60% |
Core and Wellbeing Extras | $250 | 60% |
Advantage Extras | $250 | 70% |
Say, for example, you’re on the NIB Basic Extras Package. That means that in a year, you can claim 100% of the cost of your eligible optical services and products. That is, up to the limit of $150 per person–and so on down the table.
It’s important to understand that your annual limit will depend on your health fund. Some funds will offer benefits as percentages (like NIB) or flat coverages, so make sure that you’re familiar with the difference in coverage between the health providers.
*Note, the above table has been created based on the singles cover for NIB. To find out more about the different NIB health insurance level packages or to find yours, head to their extras page and read more
