Are Contact Lenses Safe For Sport?

Are contact lenses safe for sports? This is a question that many people have, and it’s a good question to ask, whether you’re a weekend warrior or a professional athlete. After all, you don’t want to take any chances with your vision. In this blog post, we’ll look at the various benefits and risks associated with wearing contact lenses during physical activity, and explore some of the precautions you can take to protect your vision.

THE ADVANTAGES OF WEARING CONTACT LENSES FOR SPORTS

Athletes who wear contact lenses can enjoy better vision and improved performance on the field, pitch, or in the gym. And yet, many people still ask the question: are contact lenses as safe as eyeglasses for sports? Whether you prefer playing basketball or lifting weights, here are some of the benefits associated with swapping your frames for lenses:

  • Clear vision and superior peripheral vision — This can be a big advantage when playing sports that require quick reactions, such as tennis or hockey.
  • Contacts don’t fog up the way glasses do — Plus, they won’t get dirty or obscure your vision when it rains, a real problem for athletes who play outdoors.
  • Contacts don’t bounce around — Not only are they more comfortable to wear, but much less likely to slip off during sweaty physical activity.
  • Contacts won’t obscure headgear — They won’t come off during rough or contact sports, and can’t snap or break like glasses can.
  • They’ll protect your eyes from the sun — UV-absorbing contact lenses filter out harmful rays, reduce glare, and improve contrast.

CONTACT LENSES FOR SWIMMING AND WATER SPORTS

They might be a useful solution for exercising on land, but can you wear contact lenses in the sea? It may seem like a convenient way to keep your vision clear while enjoying the water, but there are actually several good reasons to avoid doing so.

Not only can salt water irritate the eyes and cause discomfort, but it dries out the lenses and makes them susceptible to damage. Even worse, salt water can contain bacteria that can lead to serious eye infections. For these reasons, it’s generally best to stick to prescription swimming goggles or daily disposable lenses in the water.
