Do I need glasses?

Few of the most common signs coming into an eye test indicating glasses are needed will be: blurry vision (whether it be distance or near), eye strain, headaches, migraines, struggling to focus and street signs not being as clear as they used to be. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms whether it be permanently or intermittently come visit one of the 1001 Optical stores for a comprehensive eye test at no cost to you (Bulk billed).

Can new glasses cause eye strain?

Getting a new pair of glasses should not cause eye strain. If there is any discomfort from new glasses this may be your brain not being used to the new prescription that is given. Usually with persistence and increased wear your brain will cleverly adapt within a few days and there won’t be any discomfort present. If discomfort and eyestrain symptoms persist for over 2 weeks, come into one of our 1001 Optical stores so we can try our best to get the glasses perfect for you.

Can wearing glasses make you dizzy?

Wearing glasses typically should not make you dizzy, sometimes there are compromises that are made where a stronger prescription will give you better clarity but if heavily deviated from the current prescription and what you are used to, may cause some discomfort. Sometimes it is just a case of wearing your new prescription in and getting your brain used to the new prescription (just like a pair of new shoes). What to clean glasses with?

When cleaning glasses we strongly recommend using a lens cleaning spray and a microfiber cloth (included with all purchases of glasses). It is always best to clean both the outside surface of the lens and the inside surface of the lens. One spray per side of the lens and a wipe down with the microfibre cloth will make your glasses sparkle as good as new!

Do’s and Don’ts of reading glasses

Can I wear reading glasses all the time?

This will depend on your reading glasses magnification or prescription, if it is generally a very weak or low prescription then it may not hinder any day to day activities and can even slightly crispen things up for you. However if it is a stronger reading prescription we do not recommend wearing these all the time, we recommend wearing glasses for reading/ipads/computers/laptops and generally near work or concentration tasks. If you want to wear glasses all the time without having to take them on and off you should be considering multifocal lenses.

How do you know what strength reading glasses to get?

When selecting reading glasses your strength will be determined by your age, working distance and comfort. This can be determined by your local optometrist at 1001 Optical, alongside any tweaks to the strength of the reading glasses so we can tailor it perfectly for you and whatever near tasks you may be needing them for.

Why do you need reading glasses?

Once we hit the age of ~ 40 years old, technically everyone needs a pair of reading glasses. This is due to Presbyopia, Presbyopia is the fancy way of saying that the lens in your eye responsible for focusing up close becomes less elastic and loses its ability to focus as sharply as it used to. This is why reading glasses are needed, especially if you are having to hold your phone or documents at further away arm lengths!
