Making the Most of Your Bupa Optical Cover

At 1001 Optometry, it’s our mission to provide quality eye care that’s affordable and reliable. For this reason, we’ve made it as pain-free as possible to claim your Bupa optical extras benefits, before they expire on 31st December.

As a Bupa member, you’re eligible to make a Bupa optical claim every calendar year. But remember, if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it–meaning any unused benefits will be lost at the end of the year.

So, make the most of your Bupa optical cover, and make sure you’re claiming those benefits before the holidays end!

Bupa Optical Cover

Not all health funds are equal. Your optical health insurance policy will determine your level of coverage, benefits and claims process. On top of this, these features will vary from provider to provider, and policy to policy.

What’s Included?

At Bupa, your health fund with optical extras benefits will cover:

  • Spectacle frames

  • Spectacle and sunglass prescription lenses

    • Excludes: add-ons like high-index material, coatings and tinting

  • Contact lenses

  • Certain lens coatings

How Much Can I Claim?

How much you’re eligible to claim back on your optical services and products varies depending on your health insurance package.

For Bupa members, you can use the table* below to find the yearly limits associated with your level of health insurance:

Bupa Insurance Package

Optical Annual Limit

Starter Extras

$150

Freedom 60 Extras

$150

FLEXtras

$200

Wellness Extras

$250

Super Extras

$250

Super Extras Active

$250

Top Extras

$300

Top Extras Boost

$350

Core Extras

$200

Freedom 60 Boost Extras

$250

This represents the maximum amount you can claim on your eligible optical products or services per person. So for example, if you're on the Super Extras plan, you can get up to $250 back per person in a calendar year.

*Note, the above table is based on Bupa Singles Cover. For more info, we'd recommend checking out the Bupa website or extras cover page.

Waiting Periods

When it comes to claiming back your optical, waiting periods apply.

The waiting period for optical services is typically 2 months, meaning you can claim with Bupa two months after you’ve taken out your policy.

However, this may differ from policy to policy, so always check with Bupa or visit us in-store for guidance!

Claiming Your Optical Extras As A Bupa Health Fund Member

Claiming your optical extras using your Bupa health fund is a straightforward process with 1001 Optometry.

You can make your claim either in person when you’re in-store, or online if you’re purchasing remotely.

Bupa Optical Claim In-Store

Provided you have your Bupa Card with you, we can immediately process your optical claims at any of our store locations.

Bupa Optical Claim Online

Alternatively, if you’re purchasing your optical products online, simply email us at contactus@1001optical.com.au after processing your purchase. You can request an itemised invoice for your prescription purchase.

You’ll need to make sure this includes:

  • Provider details

  • Date of service

  • Item description

  • Cost of each item

From there, you’ll just need to follow one of the steps below:

  1. Mobile submission: Login to your myBUPA app to submit your claim instantly by following the prompts. You can take a photo of your receipt and submit it through the app.

  2. Online: Sign in to your BUPA account on their website and submit your claim through the online portal.

  3. In-person: Visit a BUPA retail centre to meet with staff and submit your claim in person.

  4. By mail: Fill out a claim form and mail it with your original receipts to BUPA's claims address.

Try to submit your claim as close to the purchase date as possible. Bupa typically accepts claims for up to two years after purchase, but save yourself the risk of missing out and make your claim straight away.

Bulk-billed Eye Tests

To maintain your eye health, we recommend that you complete an eye examination at least once every two years.

If you have a Medicare card, your eye test may be completely covered, however, this will depend on:

  • Eligibility: You must have a valid Medicare card to be eligible for bulk billing

  • Age:

    • For those 65 years of age or older, you’re eligible to receive a bulk-billed eye test once a year.

    • For those under 65 years old, you’re eligible for a bulk-billed eye test once every three years.

  • Time since the last test: Check that your last test was over three years ago to make sure you qualify.

  • Medical Conditions: If you’ve got certain medical conditions that require more frequent eye checks, consult your GP to see if you’re eligible for additional bulk-billed tests.

  • Standard eye test: Bulk billing only covers standard comprehensive eye tests. Any glasses or services needed after that may incur extra charges. That’s where your Bupa health insurance kicks in!
