This policy explains how 1001 Optical Pty Limited, trading as 1001 Optometry (“we”, “us”, “our”), handles personal information through the Magnif-eye app (magnifeye.1001optometry.com.au).
Magnif-eye is a myopia risk screening tool for parents and guardians to use with their children. It is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a professional eye examination.
We handle your information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
1. What We Collect
Photos of your child.
You upload photos from your camera roll for our AI to scan for visual indicators associated with myopia risk (focus-related squinting and focus-related head tilting). The AI may also detect secondary observations like gaze asymmetry or eye protrusion, which are not related to myopia but may be worth mentioning to your optometrist.
Before uploading, you confirm consent via a checkbox. Photos are deleted from our servers immediately after analysis. They are never stored, shared with anyone, used to train AI models, or viewed by any person.
Questionnaire responses
The app includes a mandatory questionnaire covering your child’s age, family history of myopia, distance-vision behaviours, screen time, outdoor time, and whether they wear glasses. This information is used to generate a risk score. It is deleted from our servers when your session ends.
Results
The app generates a risk category (High, Medium, or Low) based on your questionnaire answers and the AI scan. You can download a PDF of your results during your session. Once your session ends, all results are deleted from our servers. We do not keep a copy of the PDF. If you don’t download it during your session, it cannot be retrieved later.
Email address (optional)
The app may offer you the option to subscribe to updates about children’s eye health. This is entirely optional and not required to use the app. You can unsubscribe at any time.
Device and usage data
We automatically collect technical data such as your device type, browser, IP address, how you found the app (e.g. via a social media ad), and how you interact with it (e.g. which pages you visit, whether you complete the screening). This data is collected through analytics tools described in Section 4.
2. Children’s Data
The app is designed for parents and guardians to use. We do not collect information directly from children. By using the app, you confirm you are the parent or legal guardian and have authority to consent to the processing of your child’s photos.
We minimise what we collect. The questionnaire does not ask for your child’s name, date of birth, school, or any other directly identifying information. Photos are deleted immediately after analysis.
The “Start again” feature allows you to screen multiple children. Each session is independent and not linked to any other.
We comply with all applicable Australian privacy laws.
3. Who We Share With
Service providers: The app is built by VML Australia and hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS Sydney). These providers process data on our behalf to deliver the app. VML does not retain access to user data after delivery.
HOYA Lens Australia: Magnif-eye is a joint initiative with HOYA. We may share aggregated, de-identified usage data (e.g. total screenings, risk category breakdowns) with HOYA to evaluate the initiative. No individual-level data, photos, or email addresses are shared.
Analytics and advertising: We use Google Analytics and may use tracking pixels from Meta (Facebook/Instagram), TikTok, and other advertising platforms to understand how the app is used and measure advertising effectiveness. These tools use cookies and may link your app activity to your existing profiles on those platforms if you are logged in. See Section 4 for details.
Email provider: If you subscribe, we may use a third-party provider to deliver emails on our behalf.
Legal requirements: We may disclose information where required by Australian law, a court order, or a regulatory authority.
4. Cookies and Tracking
The app uses cookies for three purposes:
-
Essential: Required for the app to work (e.g. session management).
-
Analytics: Google Analytics tracks usage patterns like page views and session duration.
-
Advertising: Tracking pixels from Meta, TikTok, Google Ads, and other advertising platforms may be used to measure campaign performance by recording events like screening starts and booking clicks.
These tools may process data outside Australia, including in the United States. We take reasonable steps to ensure overseas recipients handle data in accordance with Australian privacy standards.
You can manage cookies through your browser settings. You can also opt out of tracking via the privacy or ad settings within each platform (e.g. Facebook ad preferences, Google account settings, TikTok privacy settings). Disabling cookies may affect app functionality.
5. What We Keep (and What We Don’t)
We designed the app to minimise data retention:
-
Photos: Deleted immediately after analysis. Never stored.
-
Questionnaire answers and results: Deleted when your session ends.
-
PDF results: Generated for download, then deleted from our servers. Not retrievable after your session.
-
Email address: Retained only if you subscribe. Removed within 30 days of unsubscribing.
-
Analytics data: Aggregated and de-identified usage data may be retained by Google Analytics per their policies. Not linked to your screening results.
In short: once your session ends, we hold no personal information about you or your child, unless you have separately subscribed to emails or booked an appointment.
6. Security
The app is hosted on secure servers in Australia (AWS Sydney, ap-southeast-2). All data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/SSL. Access to any retained data (such as email addresses) is restricted to authorised personnel. In the event of a data breach likely to cause serious harm, we will notify affected individuals and the OAIC under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
7. Your Rights
Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you can:
-
Request access to personal information we hold about you
-
Request correction of inaccurate information
-
Request deletion of information no longer needed (photos are already deleted automatically)
-
Unsubscribe from emails at any time
-
Lodge a complaint about how we handle your information
We will respond to requests within 30 days. Contact us at contactus@1001optical.com.au.
8. Important Information
-
Results are not a substitute for a professional eye examination. We recommend regular eye checks for all children regardless of their screening result.
-
The app may produce false positives or false negatives. This is inherent in any screening tool. Secondary observations (gaze asymmetry, eye protrusion) are not related to the myopia score and should be discussed with your optometrist.
